Yaiza Bocos

Yaiza Bocos is a philosopher, art theorist and historian specialized in gustatory practices. Her research is dedicated to the transdisciplinary exploration of the intersections between art, food, and creativity, with a particular focus on the aesthetic experience from the perspective of the living body. Through the concept of “the gesture of eating”, her work seeks to understand the meanings that emerge from ingestion, drawing on a gestural notion of cognition within the framework of new materialisms, contemporary ontologies, and artistic research.

Conceptualizing her research as a form of dialogue, she employs a range of methodologies and theoretical perspectives, including practice-based approaches to artistic, creative and reflexive engagements with food. Her approach has led to collaborations with artists such as Antoni Miralda and creative chefs such as Ferran Adrià. She was coordinator of the artistic research and curatorial practice at the Satellite FoodCultura Boqueria art center, focusing on emergent food-related art in the city of Barcelona. She has been a member of diverse research teams which combine art and philosophy profiles at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, where she taught “Gustatory Aesthetics” in the Master’s program in Applied Philosophy under the innovation program Art en Curs. She has served as a visiting lecturer at various universities and  has participated in numerous national and international conferences, such as the 7th Latin American Food Design Congress (Cochabamba), the Annual Conference of the European Society for Aesthetics (Warsaw), Encuentros Indiscretos at the University of Pamplona (Colombia), and Uncommon Senses V (Montreal) or Entre savoirs et saveurs : manger, boire, vivre dans le monde hispanique (Paris). She has also organized events such as the Seminar Como Arte and the Feeding Creativity Workshop (Barcelona). She has published in various journals of interest, such as Journal of Somaesthetics, Papel Máquina, LaMurad, the Southern Journal of Research in Art and Design, Memorias de la Red Latinoamericana de Diseño y Comida, and the Anuari de la Societat Catalana de Filosofia.

She is professor of Visual Culture and Contemporary Creation at Universidad de La Laguna (Tenerife), and active member of FoodCultura (Barcelona). She currently lives in the Canary Islands, where she is exploring taste as an ecological and transformative sense.
